"...I found out when I made Qt's first font system. The X API sucks big time and made it a lot worse. All you could ask for was a list of strings with a hacky encoding of font types (one for each and every font instance) and you really couldn't trust that encoding was always kosher. Messy heuristics was the only option. Also you had to tell X the maximum number of of strings you wanted back. I set it randomly at 38k-1, 32767, and asked for more if I got that many. Years later I had a look at the font code in gtk, and sure enough, they also asked for 32767. The line of code had the comment "not sure why we are doing this" :-)"
